Don't Skip Book Club
According to Reading Group Choices, there are five reasons not to skip book club — even if you didn’t finish the book: You don’t have to be an expert on the book. The conversation is often better than the book. You probably have more to contribute than you think. You may leave inspired. And you’ll stay connected to the group.
I think those reasons apply to more than book club. They apply to life.
We do not have to be experts. We just need open ears and a willingness to learn something new. Conversation is often the best part of any meeting. Everyone has something to contribute. And you inspire me with your smiles, kind words, stories, and knowledge. I learn something new each time.
Most importantly, community is about connection. To feel connected, you need to participate.
So, come join us at the Brownsville Community Library for one of our free programs.
The Page Turners Book Club meets Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. in the Kirk Room. This month we will be discussing “The Place of Tides” by James Rebanks. And remember those five reasons above — you can still join us even if you didn’t finish the book!
On Thursday, Sept. 17, at 6 p.m., local attorney Danielle M. Myers is generously donating her time as our guest speaker for Estate Planning: Making a Trust. She will explain the documents that make up a trust and how they operate after death. The session will be held in the Kirk Room and is free and open to the public. No registration is required, and general questions are welcome.
Do you like to stitch, knit, crochet, hand-sew, or do other kinds of handiwork? The Thread Wizards Stitchery Group meets each Wednesday from 1–3 p.m. Bring whatever you’re working on and enjoy some conversation while getting something done.
Story Time is held every Friday at 11 a.m. These fun, interactive programs are followed by craft time for all ages.
Our local Death Café also meets at the library, offering a comfortable space for conversations about death and dying. The next gathering is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 6:30 p.m. in the Kirk Room.
Whether you come for a program, a book, a craft, a conversation, or simply to see a familiar face, we hope you’ll stop by.
After all, everyone has something to contribute.
